Location:
Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg, a baroque castle, is situated on a hill
in the centre of Bensberg and offers a magnificent view of the city of
Cologne that is 12 km away. Originally planned as a hunting lodge, during
the building phase the plan turned more and more towards the role model
of Versailles. It is the second-largest baroque castle northern of the
Alps. Its exposed location with fantastic view of the the bight of Cologne
and its surroundings already impressed Goethe and his contemporaries. Today,
you there is a collection service of the hotel to fetch you from Clogne-Bonn
airport, which is about 20 km away. Or you can hire one of the flashy cars
of the hotels, such as a BMW Z4, in order to independently discover the
surroundings.
History:
Schloss Bensberg was built from 1700-1716 by Prince Jan Wellem (Kuerfuerst
Johann Wilhelm II.) as his private retreat with the help of the Italian
architect count Matteo d'Alberti. Sadly, Prince Jan Wellem died in 1716
before he could sleep in his new castle himself. 300 years later and following
a lavish renovation, guests from all over the world can enjoy the castle
now since the inauguration as Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg. From 1945 to
1999, the caste was uses by the Belgian army, but in 1997 it was sold to
the by the state North-Rhine-Westphalia to the Aachner und Muenchner Lebensversicherung,
which leased it to the Althoff Hotel Group. Since 2000, Schloss Bensberg
was opened to the public as the new Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg.
Rooms
and Suites: Following a lavish renovation, it has emerged as an outstanding
luxury hotel, offering its guests exquisite rooms with such contemporary
conveniences as air conditioning, three telephones, fax machines and Internet
connections. The rooms all offer cutting-edge conveniences and modern facilities
for business and private travellers. Transforming it into the Grandhotel
Schloss Bensberg Cologne, the building now has 84 luxury rooms and 36 suites.
The best view is reserved for the Deluxe Suites or Presidential Suites:
the magnificent view of the far away, yet distinguished view of the Cologne
dome - the layout of the whole castle is facing it directly, although the
dome was not finished a the time of the construction of the castle.
Restaurants
and Bars: There are three main restaurants in Schloss Bensberg: the
Michelin starred Vendôme with French haute cuisine, the German cuisine
focused Jan Wellem as well as the Italian restaurant Enoteca. The Vendôme
has been decorated with 3 Michelin Stars and 19 Gault Millau points. Its
chef, Joachim Wissler, has been awarded with the “Chef de Cuisine of the
year 2005” of the magazine “Der Feinschmecker” - the leading German restaurant
journal. The Jan Wellem restaurant offers refinements inspired by the region.
The atmosphere is determined by harmonious shades, the subtle interplay
of which provides a visual treat. Enoteca offers light mediterranean selections,
complemented by an extensive wine cellar. The Lobby Bar is available for
afternoon tea and light meals and the Kamin Bar for international cocktails
and snacks.
Sport
and Spa: The indoor Beauty & Spa area, covering an area of 1000
m² and comprising a sauna landscape, fitness centre and exclusive
treatment programme, invites you to relax. Schloss Bensberg will arrange
sporting activities in cooperation with the leading clubs in the vicinity:
whether it be tennis, horse-riding or golf. In addition to traditional
treatments such as massage, lymph drainage therapy, and relaxation programmes,
the beauty spas at Schloss Bensberg offer special treatments such as the
Caribbean facial and body treatments, as well as phyto-aromatic facials.
The Spa uses the high-quality cosmetic products by La Prairie, Sisley and
Ligne St. Barth.
