Reid's Palace, Funchal, Madeira,
Portugal
Location:
Reid's Palace Grandhotel is located in Funchal, the capital of Madeira,
which belongs to Portugal. Madeira is situated in the Atlantic off the
West African coast, just north of the Canaries. Madeira is 36 miles long
and 14 miles wide and has a population of approximately 300,000 people.
20km from Funchal is the airport, which was expanded to cater also for
long-distance jumbo jets from the Americas or Asia. But you can also arrive
by boat in the port. Winston Churchill used to arrive with a flying boat
from England, when a flying boat service between Southampton, England and
Funchal was introduced after the Second World War. Today Madeira is just
a short flight away from most major European cities, yet the feel of Reid's
has barely changed.
History:
When William Reid first stepped ashore in 1836, he was a 14-year-old cabin
boy with just £5. Making a fortune in Madeira's flourishing wine
trade, he later let farms to sun-seeking Northern European families and
acquired hotels. Finally, he was ready to realize his dream - to build
the unique hotel that would bear his name. Finding a rocky site west of
Funchal, he ordered it to be strewn with tons of rich soil, creating a
foundation for the lush sub-tropical gardens that surround Reid's today
and are the perfect place for a sundowner. A success from the moment it
opened its doors in 1891, Reid's roll-call of celebrities began with the
arrival of Empress Elizabeth I of Austria. More royalty graced Reid's when
Edward VIII visited it on his way to South Africa. The Blandy Family, founding
members of the Madeira Wine Company, acquired the hotel in 1937. Taking
into account the views of the guests, who tended to look upon Reid's as
a home away from home, they added new wings and two heated sea-water pools
and ordered the re-design of The Dining Room - known as the House of Lords
because of the number of British peers who dined there.
Rooms
and Suites:
While working on his war memoirs and painting in the nearby village of
Câmara de Lobos, Winston Churchill occupied rooms on the ground floor.
In honour of the great British leader, they are now known as the Churchill
suite. The Churchill Suite and the George Bernard Shaw Suite are both named
after the great men who stayed in them. Reid's Palace Hotel has 163 rooms
in total, 128 rooms and 35 suites, each one individually decorated in delicate
pastel tones and offering elegance and luxury with the emphasis on traditional
style with modern comforts. They were all renovated after in July
1996, Reid's was taken over by Orient-Express Hotels Group. Elaborate marble
bathrooms and vanity units and, in the newly refurbished rooms and suites
as well as crisp white embroidered bedspreads echo the Portuguese traditions
of Reid's Palace.
