7. Jean-Louis Scherrer Haute Couture
(founded in 1962)
| Originally a
dancer, Jean-Louis Scherrer switched to study fashion at the Chambre Syndicale
de la Couture. Scherrer later worked side by side with Yves Saint Laurent
at the house of Dior. When Dior died in 1957 and Yves Saint Laurent takes
over as head designer, Jean-Louis Scherrer leaves and works for Louis Féraud.
Scherrer opens his own couture house in 1962. Scherrer has counted prestigious
clients among his customers such as Queen Noor, Farah Diba, wife of the
former Shah of Persia, the Princesses Faisal of Saudi Arabia, the Baroness
von Thyssen, Sophia Lauren, Raquel Welch and French author Francoise Sagan.
The famous Scherrer blazer with its decorated breast pockets and tailored
shoulders has become a classic. In 1971, the Pret-à-Porter line
was introduced. Bergdorf Goodman store have the exclusive rights for Scherrer
in America. In 1997 Scherrer was taken over by the French financial group
E.K. Finances.
Current chief designer of
Scherrer is Stéphane Rolland who is of old French aristocratic descent.
Having spent a great part of his childhood in South America, Rolland spent
2 years at the 'Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne'
(the Haute Couture Fashion School in Paris), the classic training for all

then went on to work as a designer
for the legendary Balenciaga who was couturier to the Spanish royal family,
before setting up his own fashion studio in 1991. He has been in charge
of the creation of Scherrer's Haute Couture Collection, the Pret-à-porter
(Ready-to-wear) fashion and the accessories since 1997. However, for the
young 32 year old designer haute couture remains his ultimate passion.
