9. Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture
(founded in 1976)
| Born in 1952,
trendy Jean Paul Gaultier founded his fashion house in 1976. The 'Enfant
Terrible of the French Fashion World' started his fashion career at the
age of 18 when he went to work for Pierre Cardin in 1970. In 1971 he moved
to Jacques Estérel; later on to Jean Patou where he stayed for two
years. He returns to Pierre Cardin who sends him to Manila in the Philippines
where he creates collections that are destined for the US. Ever since his
first collections the corset has been his favourite piece of clothing.
Madonna belongs to his clients.
Jean Paul Gaultier has designed the costumes for her 1990 "Blond Ambition
World Tour". Gaultier also designed the clothes for Peter Greenaway's 1990
film "The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover". He has also designed
costumes for many other films such as Pedro Almodóvar's 'Kika' in
1994 and Luc Besson's 'The Fifth Element' in 1997. In 1999, Jean Paul Gaultier
signed a business partnership with Hermès International, which now
holds a 35% stake in the fashion house.
Jean Paul Gaultier is a designer
who refuses to conform. He designs clothes for the creative set, the avant-garde
young, often inspired by and experimenting with the streets of London and
Paris. |

| In January 1997,
Jean Paul Gaultier launches his first Haute Couture collection called 'Gaultier
Paris' for the Spring/Summer 1997 season. Collections are now presented
twice a year in Paris during January and July. Clients are generally invited
to see the fashion show. Then they get in touch with the Salon Couture
to see the models again and to make fittings with Madame Lardeur and Madame
AnneLise who supervise the making of the dresses. Regular clients have
their own stockman kept with their measurements in order to avoid fittings. |
