The House of Pierre Cardin (founded
in 1950)
| Cardin (born
in 1922) and his futuristic visions were a style force in the 1960s and
1970s. In 1963, the designer dressed the Beatles in Cardin style. He is
credited with inventing the stretch jersey and the unisex look. The style
cognoscenti know him as a creator of women's and men's wear. At the age
of 78, Pierre Cardin, the designer, shows no signs of stopping. He is an
all round design genius who not only produces fashion, but also designs
china, perfume, leather ware and - has created the musical 'Mannon' in
Los Angeles. Pierre Cardin is the only designer in the world who has managed
his own fashion house for over 50 years independently. He also became the
first Western designer to have a fashion show in Japan. And in 1991, Pierre
Cardin was again first to present a fashion show on the Red Square in Moscow.
Born in 1922 in Venice, Italy,
Pierre Cardin was apprenticed to a tailor at the age of 14. In 1945,
after World War II, at the age of 20 Cardin started working for the couture
house of Paquin making costumes |

for Jean Cocteau. Stints at
eccentric Marcelle Chaumont, Elsa Schiaparelli and at the House of Dior
in 1946 followed. In 1950, he opens his own couture house in the rue Richepanse
in Paris and, in 1953, he presents his first Haute Couture Collection for
women. In 1959, Pierre Cardin is the first couturier ever to stage a ready-to-wear
show. He shocks the whole of Paris by showing his models in a Parisian
department store. For this the Haute Couture Syndicate revokes his membership.
It should be noted that these days, having a ready-to-wear collection is
by no means something unusual for a couturier. The 'enfant terrible' (French
for 'terrible child') of French fashion, Jean-Paul Gaultier, has been an
assistant to Cardin in the past.
