Aston Martin Vanquish
by Carlos
de Alzaga
The
Aston Martin Vanquish is James Bond's official company car. It made its
first appearance in the latest James Bond film Die
Another Day. It is also the sports car Prince Charles drives as a DB4
Volante (convertible). The entry ticket to this very exclusive British
Gentlemen club, i.e. the purchase price, is US$ 250,000. To vanquish means
“to conquer” or “to defeat” – and this is a name which lives up to its
British heritage. However, the Aston Martin Vanquish is also the sign of
a new era of Aston Martin under the umbrella of Ford’s Premier Automotive
Group. It is without any doubt that the Aston Martin is the jewel in Ford's
crown. Ford's Premier Automotive Group consists of Aston Martin, Jaguar,
Land Rover and Volvo. The group was originally formed by Wolfgang Reitzle,
former second man at BMW, who struck the deal for the Aston Martin Vanquish
to be the James Bond car.
From
1970 to July 2001, the V8 has been Aston Martin's top model. However, it
is the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish, which is now the most sophisticated and
technologically advanced model ever to be designed, developed and built
by Aston Martin. It boasts a maximum speed of 306 km/h (190 mph) and a
6.0 liter V12 engine with 460 horsepower. It is being built at the Newport
Pagnell factory in the UK and is Aston Martin’s new premier, top of the
range, flagship model. Available as either a two or two plus two seat coupe
the V12 Vanquish will accelerate to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds (0-100 km/h in
under 5.0 seconds) and 160 km/h (100 mph) in under 10 seconds. Through
the application of advanced design techniques and materials it is lighter,
stiffer and stronger and offers superior performance to that of the V8
engined Vantage model which it replaces. In conjunction with the electronic
drive-by-wire throttle system which is fitted to the second generation
V12 Aston Martin engine, finger tip controlled Formula 1 style paddles
enable almost imperceptible gear changes to be completed in under 250 milliseconds.
International
award winning designer Ian Callum’s elegant, classic body design which
reflects the pedigree, heritage and tradition of Aston Martin, is both
bold and dynamic with finely detailed features for the interior and the
exterior. The design of the V12 Vanquish is already established as a modern
classic. Perfectly proportioned, Ian Callum’s design confirms the promise
of outstanding “Supercar” performance. Every carefully detailed feature
provides graphic evidence of the painstaking craftsmanship and quality
which is invested in its construction. The distinctive radiator grille
and lower air intake which have become the hallmarks of a modern Aston
Martin are flanked by the equally bold and distinctive auxiliary driving
lamps and front direction turn indicators. Both the front wings and
bonnet panels incorporate a series of finely detailed compound curves which
sweep back to the steeply raked windscreen pillars and low curving roof
line. Deeply sculptured window sills and door panels accentuate Ian Callum’s
classic design while the prominent rear wheel arches with the short tail
section and rear spoiler incorporated in the boot lid complement the classic
overall proportions of the V12 Vanquish.
